How EV Charging Works in Australia
There are two main types of EV chargers: AC (Level 2) and DC fast chargers. AC chargers typically deliver 7-22kW and are found at shopping centres, workplaces, and homes. DC fast chargers can deliver 50-350kW and are found along highways and at dedicated charging hubs.
Typical Charging Costs
- Home charging: A$0.25-0.35/kWh (off-peak rates)
- Public AC: A$0.30-0.45/kWh or free at some locations
- DC fast charging: A$0.45-0.70/kWh depending on network
Why Charging Slows Above 80%
To protect battery health, EVs reduce charging speed significantly above 80% state of charge. This is why most experts recommend charging to 80% for daily driving and only going to 100% for long trips.
